Mego Batman Removable Cowl and Alter Ego Bruce Wayne sold at Auction

Although we spent a lot of time and energy hunting at actual places, Comic Shops, Conventions and Flea Markets, we also hunt at auction sites on the Internet. Every so often we come across a unique item that catches our eye or reminds us if our childhood. I can guess if you have been collecting for a long time you have had similar experiences.

In a recent Hakes auction we came across a really cool combo, both Batman with removable cowl and Alter Ego Bruce Wayne were Mego figures I wanted as a kid. Could never find them as they were on the rare side, but none the less I wanted them. To see them both together, a great idea if you ask me brought back some fond memories.

These two figures came from the collection of Chip Kidd, who wrote the 2001 book "Collecting Batman". You can find these on page 178 and 180. 

Batman Removable Cowl

Batman is a type 1 figure, complete with removable cowl, belt, gloves, boots and cape. Released in 1972.

Alter Ego Bruce Wayne

Bruce Wayne is on a type 2 body with correct head with no copyright on back of neck, two piece suit, shirt w/tie and shoes. Lt. aging to outfit w/slt. tanning to shirt under jacket. A 1974 Montgomery Wards exclusive. 

Winning bid was $555.62, a bargain in my opinion.

Captain America Limited Edition Retro-Action Figure Set

Seems like Mego figures as we knew them in the 1970's are making a big comeback, DC comics has had almost the whole line plus new editions released this past year. Now we get a special limited edition Captain America 3-pack to hunt for.

This retro action figure set includes Cap’s 1970s Mego costume, a slightly more modern and realistic costume, a military uniform, and three interchangeable heads that let you switch between Captain America and Steve Rogers. Other accessories include interchangeable hands, a classic circular shield, the original badge-shaped shield, and a booklet on the history of Megos, all bundled in a reproduction window box.

The set will be available March 2015 but it can be pre-ordered now for $69.99 at Entertainment Earth.

Why we still love Mego action figures!

If you grew up at any point in the 1970's you owned or wanted to own at least one Mego figure. The company which produced some of the greatest superhero figures ever created, owned the licensing rights to both Marvel and DC heroes. The line was called "World's Greatest Super Heroes!"

The popularity of this line of 8" articulated figures created the standard for action figures in the 1970s and featured many popular superhero and villain figures (but why no Flash or Green Lantern).  Some of the most sought after figures are the earliest Batman and Robin figures which had removable masks but they were easily lost, finding one today with the original masks are almost impossible. 

The first group of figures were released in a solid box (no window) but the boxes were damaged in stores by shoppers who wanted to see the figure inside, again collectors today try valiently to hunt down mint boxed figures. The design was quickly changed to a window style box. To start the line, Mego introduced Batman, Robin, Aquaman and Superman. Many others would follow. Boxes would also be changed to carded figures as the line progressed.

 Marvel Comics Heroes: Captain America, Conan, Falcon, Green Goblin, Hulk, Human Torch, Invisible Girl, Iron Man, Lizard, Mr. Fantastic, Spider-Man,  The Thing and Thor. For the South Africa, Jet Jungle was included in the series.

There were also play sets and vehicles offered in the Worlds Greatest Superhero line. 

Mego offered thier hero line for an entire decade from 1972 until 1983.

Today's this figures, play sets and vehicles are highly sought after collectibles, hunting them down can be difficult, making them the perfect comic book collectibles to hunt for. Expect to pay anywhere from a couple of dollars to thousand of dollars. So get to hunting.
