Funko ReAction Flash and Arrow TV Series Action Figures

The last two days we have been reporting on all the comic book related toys coming out of Toy Fair in New York City. We have looked at DC Icon Figures and Guardians of the Galaxy Dorbz. I am certain we will be looking at more stuff as the fair continues, including many items from Funko.

The Funko ReAction line continues to grow reaching into iconic television and movie series. Yesterday Funko revealed their Flash and Arrow TV series figures.


The Arrow line-up will include two different Arrow figures, a Deathstroke, a Black Canary, Diggle, Arrow and a Dark Arrow Merlyn.

Flash line will start with the Flash and what looks like Captain Cold.

Two things come to mind as we continue to look at Toy Fair news, first how am I going to afford all the great stuff and second where am I going to put it all.

Toy Fair News : DC Icons Figures

DC Collectibles has revealed new DC Icon Figures. These 6 inch figures will begin hitting shelfs in November 2015, each will retail for $24.95
These13 new figures are based on designs by artist Ivan Reis.

The line will be released in 13 waves and will include the following heroes:
Wave 1 - Deadman, Green Arrow, Pre-52 Batman, Mister Miracle, Black Adam and Crisis Flash.

Wave 2 - Blue Beetle, Justice League Lex Luther and Pre-52 Hal Jordan Green Lantern

Wave 3- Pre-52 Superman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn and Atom set

Ant-Man Marvel Selection Action Figure

Are your ready for a barrage of Ant-Man merchandise. Save your pennies so you can get all he tiny goodness. We already spotlighted the Disney Vinylmation Figures, which you can go out and hunt down today. Next on the list is the Marvel Select Ant-Man Movie Action Figure Being released by Diamond Select Toys. 
We all know Ant-Man is going to be the next big Marvel Studios film, remember Guardians of the Galaxy. This 7-inch scale figure is Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, with detailed paint applications and 16 points of articulation. The figure comes packaged in the Marvel Select display packaging, with spine artwork for shelf reference, and includes a diorama base inspired by the film.

The figure has been sculpted  by Gentle Giant! It will retail for $24.99 and will hit shelves in June.

Marvel Retro Secret Wars Figures coming soon

It seems fitting that Marvel comics would release Secret Wars figures this year, it being 30 years after the original series and figures hit the shelfs. Yes back in 1985 Secret Wars was the big thing.

If you don't know what Secret Wars was don't worry, we have you covered. Secret Wars 12 issue mini-series tat was also included cross-overs into most Marvel titles. It also introduced comic fans to the Beyonder. The Beyonder took some of Earths Heroes and its worst villians to an alien planet to study them, and watch them fight each other, truly fun stuff.

Marvel is releasing a new 12 issue mini-series titles Secret Wars again this year. It just makes sense that the toy line would follow with Gentle Giant being the first one to release figures. Gentle Giant creatung these figures based directly from these old figures.  They've digitally scanned the original Secret Wars figures and reproduced them in a larger, 12-inch scale. Resealable  containers will recreate the old Secret Wars packaging.

So far four figures are scheduled for release, Black Costume Spider-Man, Hobgoblin, Wolverine, and Magneto. It is important to note that the original Secret Wars Wolverine figure was the first one of the character ever released.

You can Pre-order the Spider-man figure for a cool $90. Keep an eye out for the others.

Captain Ray and Abominable Snowman Super Amigos Action Figures

So we said good-bye to 2014 and we are welcoming in 2015. So we are going to begin the New Year the way we ended the old year, with a review of a rare Super Powers or Super Amigos action figure. We ended the year with a look at The Riddler.
We are starting the year with a look at the weirdest two figures Captain Ray and his arch-enemy The Hulk, wait I meant the Abominable Snowman.
Okay so like me you are probably thinking who the hell is Captain Ray and why is he fighting the Abominable Hulk, damn Snowman.

Captain Ray 
Captain Ray has never appeared in a Comic book and there is absolutely no history or background known about him. We also don't know what his powers are. 

The Captain Ray figure is not like any other in the line, Captain Ray's card says "Super Heroes" instead of Super Powers. The artwork on the Captain Ray card and the actual figure itself appear to be based on Superman. He wears a black/grey and yellow costume with Flash type lightning bolt symbol on his chest. He has medium brown hair.

Okay the Super Amigos Riddler was strange, a re-painted Green Lantern but the Captain Ray (or El Capitan Rayo, in his native language) is an exclusive figure to the knock-off Columbian line. 

Abominable Snowman

An Abominable Snowman action figure or  Hombre de las Nieves', literally "The Man of the Snows" was produced by Gulliver Juguetes, a Latin-American toy company located in Brazil for their Super Heroes Collection, part of their Super Powers Collection line. This line did not have direct ties to any DC Comic characters. Abominable Snowman was the enemy of Captain Rey. The figure was available in Colombia only.

The Abominable Snowman is considered the  rarest of the Super Powers/Super Amigos/Super Heroes Collection branded figures. This figure combines pieces from the two previous South American knock-offs, and even a different companies products altogether, the Hulk.  The card art appears to be the same as Captain Rey, even down to the same company logo, Gulliver Juguetes, but the art is on the wrong side, is the wrong size, and Captain Ray symbol has changed. The logo does says Super Heroes. 
The strangest thing about the Abominable Snowman figure is that is an actual recast of the Hulk action figure from the Mego Pocket Pals line. To complicate matters even more the card backer has a mixture of Marvel and DC characters.

So there you have it the two rarest and strangest figures in the Super Powers line. Okay so yes it really sounds like they are knock-offs not real figures from the line but its a new year just go with it. I don't plan on searching either of these figures out but if I see one I'll let you guys know.

The Riddler Super Amigos Action Figure

As 2014 comes to an end and 2015 is about to begin I wanted to look at the rarest figure from the 1980's DC Super Powers line. The Riddle was never released as part of the Kenner United States line but it was released in limited quantities as part of the the Super Amigos line, the Argentinian version of Kenner's Super Powers Collection.

The Riddler released in South America was a repainted Green Lantern figure that was only released in South America. The figure mold was later reused for the line of action figures called the DC Comics SuperHeroes from Toy Biz released in 1989.

When I first began collecting Super Powers figures way back in the 1980's the Riddler figure was a thing of legend, none of knew at the time before computers and the Comic Book Hunter/Gatherer blog if it really existed. At a Comic Book show towards the end of the 80's I actually saw on but it really looked like a custom made figure so I didn't buy it, price tag was a little high for the time.

If you wanted to hunt one down today they sell for around $400 carded or about $75 loose.

So before the clock strikes midnight get out and complete or start your Super Powers Collection.

New Batman Animated Series Figures

It has recently been revealed by MTV news that DC Collectibles will be debuting a new wave of figures from Batman: The Animated Series.

This new round of figures will include the original version of Batman from the series, as well as Penguin, The Riddler, and Batgirl. Ranging from 4.5" to 6" in height, the figures will hit shelfs for $24.95 each.

My two cents, we continue to live in the new golden age of comic book heroes, a new line of Batman figures are announced and MTV, yes hip, cool MTV reports it.

Captain America Limited Edition Retro-Action Figure Set

Seems like Mego figures as we knew them in the 1970's are making a big comeback, DC comics has had almost the whole line plus new editions released this past year. Now we get a special limited edition Captain America 3-pack to hunt for.

This retro action figure set includes Cap’s 1970s Mego costume, a slightly more modern and realistic costume, a military uniform, and three interchangeable heads that let you switch between Captain America and Steve Rogers. Other accessories include interchangeable hands, a classic circular shield, the original badge-shaped shield, and a booklet on the history of Megos, all bundled in a reproduction window box.

The set will be available March 2015 but it can be pre-ordered now for $69.99 at Entertainment Earth.

Why we still love Mego action figures!

If you grew up at any point in the 1970's you owned or wanted to own at least one Mego figure. The company which produced some of the greatest superhero figures ever created, owned the licensing rights to both Marvel and DC heroes. The line was called "World's Greatest Super Heroes!"

The popularity of this line of 8" articulated figures created the standard for action figures in the 1970s and featured many popular superhero and villain figures (but why no Flash or Green Lantern).  Some of the most sought after figures are the earliest Batman and Robin figures which had removable masks but they were easily lost, finding one today with the original masks are almost impossible. 

The first group of figures were released in a solid box (no window) but the boxes were damaged in stores by shoppers who wanted to see the figure inside, again collectors today try valiently to hunt down mint boxed figures. The design was quickly changed to a window style box. To start the line, Mego introduced Batman, Robin, Aquaman and Superman. Many others would follow. Boxes would also be changed to carded figures as the line progressed.

If you are collcting the Worlds Greatest Superhero line or want to start here is a list in alphabetical order: DC Comics Heroes: Aqua-man, Batgirl,  Batman, Catwoman, Green Arrow, Isis, Joker,   Mister Mxyzptlk, Penguin, Riddler, Robin, Shazam, Supergirl, Superman, Teen Titans - Speedy, Kid Flash, Aqualad, and Wonder Girl) and Wonder Woman 

 Marvel Comics Heroes: Captain America, Conan, Falcon, Green Goblin, Hulk, Human Torch, Invisible Girl, Iron Man, Lizard, Mr. Fantastic, Spider-Man,  The Thing and Thor. For the South Africa, Jet Jungle was included in the series.

There were also play sets and vehicles offered in the Worlds Greatest Superhero line. 

Mego offered thier hero line for an entire decade from 1972 until 1983.

Today's this figures, play sets and vehicles are highly sought after collectibles, hunting them down can be difficult, making them the perfect comic book collectibles to hunt for. Expect to pay anywhere from a couple of dollars to thousand of dollars. So get to hunting.

Justice League Unlimted Action Figures - Unproduced Aquaman

We have posted before about how much we enjoy collecting the Justice League Unlimited Toy line from a couple of years ago, we even posted a complete Checklist. And when we say we we mean me ( the guy who writes this blog each day) and my youngest child. She is a big comic book fan.

Recently we came across an eBay auction for an unproduced Aquaman figure, the minimum bid was $2,500. Yes two thousand five hundred dollars for one figure.

If you have collected any figure line you know that towards the end of the lines run some figures do not get produced, He-man had them, Star Wars had them and JLU has them. These unproduced figures usually appear on an advertisement somewhere and a prototype or two will exist. These are very rare, collectors that want the whole line go crazy for them and pay top dollar.

So what makes this Aquaman  different then the Aquamans  that were produced. Well first off Aquaman never appeared like this in any medium. It is a cross between one handed King Aquaman and the regular Aquaman we have know for years. Second the line got canceled before it could be produced, it never went to market. It is as rare as it gets. From our research only one exists.

If you see one buy it or send us a photo. The only warning is it could be a custom figure not a prototype so be careful. Customs are great but not as valued as prototype of unproduced figures.

Favorite Russian Superhero - Rocket Red

On a recent hunt at Special Edition- NYC I had Keith Giffin sign a copy of Justice League Europe #1. The Justice League Europe roster of heroes was an excellent mix of personalities which of
throughout the series led to comedy. One of the most interesting characters and my favorite
Russian was Rocket Red.

Rocket Red from the Justice League Europe run was Dmitri Pushkin who was Rocket Red #4. He formed a connection with Buddy Baker, Animal Man, during his time with the JLE. Dimitri was the only European on the team initially. He retired from the JLE for a many year before coming out of retirement and being killed in The Omac project. Rocket Red self-destructed in-order to save the other members of the old JLI. His last words to Booster Gold were "My wife and children, Michael ... tell them I love them." He came back as a Black Lantern during the Blackest Night story arc.

Along with appearing in comics Rocket Red was also on the Justice League Unlimited cartoon and had an action figure as a result.

Justice League Unlimited Action Figure Checklist - The hunt to complete a great toy line

As a fan the hunt is not always for comic books, we also hunt comic related items. One of our long term hunts has been figures from the Justice League United line. This DC universe line was based on the cartoon by the same name which ran from 2004 to . This was one of the most comprehensive lines ever released by DC.
The line contained the most popular characters like Superman and Batman but also many uncommon figures and variants based on the cartoon, such as Mister Miracle and Wildcat.

We are always on the hunt for these no matter where we are, comic cons, hobby shops, toy stores, garage sales and even Target. Recently shopping in Target we found an unopened Yellow Lantern Sinestro. The cashier and manager had no idea how much it was, apparently it was to old to still be on the scanner records, so they charged us $2. Always look around, no matter where you are. Treasures are everywhere.
