The Royal Flush Gang appears on The Flash

First it just so happens that the Royal Flush Gang is one of my favorite villian teams. Second before appearing in The Flash episode "The Sound and the Fury" the gang appeared on an episode of Arrow episode "Legacies".  Although the Flash appearance was a short one it was good to see them wrap up the loss end from Arrow.

Created in 1966 by Gardner Fox and Mike Sekowsky, the Royal Flush Gang is made up of Ace, King, Queen, Jack and Ten. They made there first appearance in Justice League of America #43. A high graded CGC will run you about $400, while an ungraded copy will cost you about $20. 


First Appearance
The original Royal Flush Gang was Professor Amos Fortune's childhood gang, with Fortune himself as Ace. Each member of the gang fights a different member of the Justice League, using Fortune's luck-altering "stellaration" technology to defeat them. The Royal Flush gang is finally defeated by JLA mascot Snapper Carr dressed as the Joker.

On a personal note this issue had long been on my wantlist, I finally hunted down a nice copy at NYCC. Glad to add it to my collection. It is worth adding to your collection.


On the Flash TV Show (and Arrow)
In the Flash episode " The Sound and the Fury" the Flash captures Jack and Queen at the beginning of the episode. 
On the Arrow  episode "Legacies" where King is played by Currie Graham,  Ace is portrayed by Kyle Schmid,  Jack by Tom Stevens and Queen is by Sarah-Jane Redmond. The gang is a family of bank robbers who wear hockey masks with their respective playing card. Ace is arrested, King dies, Jack and Queen get away.

Another incarnation of the Royal Flush Gang also appeared on the greatest cartoon ever made, yes the Superfriends, more specifically the Super Powers version. Have long been hunting for a cartoon cel of their appearance.

DC Lego Variant Covers - Hitting Shelves in November

Dc will continue its use of variant themed covers this coming November, following on the heals of the Octobers Halloween/Horror Variant Covers.

The Lego theme is being used to celebrate the LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham video game being released in November. The Lego renditions on each cover mirror the covers from each issues #0 which were released in September 2012, I have included an image of Batman #0 for comparison.

General Wade Eiling to appear on New Flash TV series

With each passing day anticipation for the new Flash television series grows as new characters and possible story lines are announced. We want to help you prepare for the show so we will be looking at the background of each character set to appear, we have already reviewed Plastique and Vibe. Today we look at General Wade Eiling and we can guess wether he will be based on the comic version or the Justice League Unlimited version.

General Wade Eiling first appeared in Captain Atom #1 (1987), he was created by Cary Bates, Pat Broderick and Greg Weisman. You can pick up a nice copy for less than $5.00. General Eiling appears throughout the Captain Atom series, so why not start buying all 57 issues.

First Appearance

Wade Eiling works for the military. He blackmails Nathaniel Adam into participating in an atomic experiment that turns Nathaniel into the nuclear being Captain Atom. Shortly after the experiment Captain Atom disappears for 18 years. As a result of his disappearance General Eiling would attempt the experiment again, which ends up with the creation of Major Force, which occurs later Inte Captain Atom series.

About General Wade Eiling

For a large part General Wade Eiling is the main adversary of Captain Atom, he appears throughout the series which begins afte he creates Captain Atom who disappears for 18 years. During the 18 years in which Captain Atom is gone, Eiling marries Adam's wife and acts as father to his two children. Eiling also manipulates Captain Atom into serving the military.

Eiling also battles the Justice League of America during which time he transfers his brain patterns into the indestructible body of the Shaggy Man.

On the Flash Series
General Eiling will be played by veteran actor Clancy Brown. Many comic book fans may remember Brown as the vioce of Lex Luthor for over twelve years. He has also voiced many other comic book characters including Parrallax in the Green Lantern Movie.
On the Flash TV show it appears that General Iling will resemble the version of the character that has appeared on Justice League Unlimited (see below)

Justice League Unlimited In the Justice League Unlimited cartoon series, which we are big fans of, a significantly altered version of General Wade Eiling that resembled Marvel character General 'Thunderbolt' Ross. In the series he works very closely with Cadmus Chief Amanda Waller.
General Eiling also had an action figure made from the series. You should all know by now that we collect these, check out the entire Justice League Unlimited Checklist.

Vibe on New Flash TV Series

No it's not the feeling everyone is showing in anticipation of the new series it is an actual character that will appear on the show. Vibe, whose real name is Paco Ramon has already made a guest appearance on Arrow.
 So like we did with Plastique previously, we will take a look at Vibes history in comics and other media so you can go out and hunt down some of his appearances.

Vibe was created by Gene Conway and Chuck Patton, he made his first appearance in Justice League of America Annual #2  which was released in October 1984. I recently picked up a copy in a dollar bin at a local comic convention, well worth it.

First Appearance

Paco Ramon's career as the superhero Vibe began shortly after the original Justice League of America was  disbanded by Aquaman. When Paco heard that a new Justice League was being formed in his own hometown of Detroit, he decided to give up his position as the leader of a local street gang, Los Lobos, to join up. Vibe made the team as a result of his metahuman ability to emit powerful vibratory shock waves.

About Vibe
Vibe placement on the new Justice was put into question early on when his actions resulted in the league fighting a street gang. He would prove himself valuable during many battles including defeating Despero during the Crisis of Infinite Earths.  Vibe was killed after an attack by Professor Ivo's androids during the Legends story-line. The  Martian Manhunter brought Vibe's body back to the League's mountain sanctuary, where Vibe was laid to rest in a cryogenic chamber. However, Paco's dead form was resurrected as a member of the Black Lantern Corps.

Vibe was brought back to life as part of the New 52 and again was a member of the Justice League.

Vibe also made a number of appearances on the Justice League Unlimited cartoon and was part of the toy line. If you have read any of our older posts you know how much we like the JLU line, we have been hunting for a Vibe figure.

So now that you know about Vibe go out and pick up JLA Annual #2 and the 10 issues of his solo comic, which came out in 2013. What are you waiting for?

The Justice League of America are big Groot fans!

The Guardians of the Galaxy's resident tree has become some popular that even DC comics superpowers the Justice League of America have become fans. I think this is a cosplay.

Actually this was taken from Justice League of America #9 released in 1961 but they sure do look like Groot.

Wednesday Whacked Comic Cover - The Brave and the Bold #28

Each week on Wednesday we look at a whacked cover, which is a cover that is just a bit weird or strange. This week we look at a whacked cover that is also the cover of a very important Silver Age issue, The Brave and The Bold #28 which is the first appearance of the Justice League of America. It is a highly sought after and very valuable issue. So why is it in our Whacked cover post?

Well in the Justice Leagues First appearance, DC greatest heroes are brought together to fight a giant alien starfish named Starro. Yes they are fighting a starfish which appears on the cover. The Justice League has fought Darkseid, The Legion of Doom, The Crime Syndicate and countless other world menaces, but in their first appearance they fought a starfish. I guess I just always found this a little bit whacky so I have included here as this week Wednesday Whacked Cover.

Sci-Fi City - On the Hunt in Florida

Recent, we reviewed the Orlando based comic shop Sci-Fi City. As a follow up we wanted to look at the spoils of the hunt.
We have been on many hunting trips as we gatherer more and more treasures for our collection. We have rarely had as much success on a single hunt at a comic shop then we had at Sci-Fi City.

First off Sci-Fi City sells their back issues for cover price, which is awesome. We went through boxes of older comics which went as far back as the Silver Age, yes the Silver Age. For those older comics they round up to a $1.00

Jack Kirby
We picked up two issues Of Jack Kirby's New Gods. Issues #8 and Issue #9 are great examples of Kirby's work with DC comics. The story goes that Kirby had a falling out with Stan Lee so he moved to Marvels competition DC comics. DC gave Kirby free range to do what he wanted, so he created a new universe with all new characters. We are huge fans of Kirby's work adding two more issues to our Kirby collection for a buck apiece made this trip worth it for us all by itself. We did buy more.

Late 1980's/Early 1990's issues
We have made it pretty obvious in recent posts that we are huge fans of the comics that were produced during the late 1980's through the early 1990's. They were much lighter then they are today, and there was an infusion of comedy throughout comics, especially DC titles.

We picked up another Crisis Cross-Over, we are always on the look-out for Crisis Cross-over because Crisis is still our favorite large scale story arc. This one was the New Teen Titans #13, paid cover price $1.25.

Also picked up more of the Hawk & Dove run as we continue our way to completion. Hunted down issues 6-12 for $1.00 each.

We also continued to fill in X-Force picking up issues 4, 6 and 7,$1.25 each. We like Rob Liefeld art, always have, always will.

For us when we are hunting finding Annuals always presents a problem, not sure why but we never seem to be able to find them. Not true this time, we got as the 1990 Justice League of America Annual #4. Love the cover.

Finally our back issue search landed us a Punisher War Journal #15 guest staring Spider-Man. This is an early Jim Lee cover.

Variant Covers
We have really enjoyed DC comics title wide monthly variant covers. June was bombshell cover month. These variants come in much smaller quantities then the regular covers and are extremely difficult to hunt down. Finding a couple more and at cover price (some stores mark them up) was another score! We added Superman/Wonder Woman #9 and Earth 2 #24, my daughter is a big Hawkgirl fan. If you are interested in all the Bombshell covers we recently posted about all of them.

If you are in the Orlando Area take a trip to Sci-Fi City it is worth every minute of it, you will spend a bunch of money and time there.

Comic Shop Review - SuperVillian Comics, Cocoa Beach FL

Continuing our Florida hunt, yesterday we spent some time in SuperVillians Comics located in Coco Beach. It is a nice little comic shop, with a small selection of new comics, toys and high end statues. They also had a table of back issues sold at cover price and a wall of higher dollar back issues.

Toys included Pop! Vinyl figures, action figures and some high end figures. I especially like the black and white Batman statues that DC has been putting out recently.

Along with the high end statues SuperVillians also have life size replicas of the power batteries from the various Lantern corps.

We purchased some comics from the back issues bin, these comics were all cover price which was great because some were from the 1980's. we picked up The Uncanny X-Men #205 and 208 for .75 each. These issues are written by Chris Claremont. Great price for some older X-Men issues.

Also picked up a reprint of Justice League of America #217. This is the So Much Fun! Reprint from 1987, paid cover price $1.25. We did some research on this reprint and found out it is very rare. Read the details below.

The store is on the smaller side and their inventory isn't very large but there were some hidden gems.  Staff was very knowledgeable and extremely friendly, which always helps. SuperVillians also had a nice selection of Greg Horn art, who happens to be one o our favorite artists. We just meet him at Wizard World Philadelphia.

The story of the So Much Fun! Justice League of America 217 reprint

2nd printing Justice League of America 217 with an altered cover. The cover image on the original Justice League of America 217 is made to look like it's jumping off the page at the reader. The So Much Fun! reprint does not have the same effects. Also, the image of the super-heroes is smaller than on the original cover. The UPC box is not on the reprint and, in its place, is a So Much Fun! box. The Justice League of America logo is also different, as the one on the reprint edition is the more current JLA logo that is found on the Justice League "Detroit" issues. There were only 5,000 copies of this and other So Much Fun! reprints, which were sold exclusively by distributor So Much Fun! to gift shops, such as card stores. These were packaged in bags of three. So Much Fun! randomly picked issues for reprinting. DC Comics had to do some production work on these, due to the changes on the covers, however, it is not known who changed the covers to reflect the newer additions. 

We have seen this issues priced at $70.00 so for cover price of $1.25 is what we consider finding a hidden treasure. Great addition to our collection.


As we always say, there are treasures out there waiting to be found.
