Freddy Funko SDCC Deadpool Exclusives

Freddy Funko Deadpool Grey Variant limited to 24

If you collect Funko Pop Vinyl! Figures you may or may not be aware that Funko has a mascot that they often use for Convention exclusives. Freddy Funko has appeared as many different heros, including Batman, Superman and Ghist Rider. Most of these Freddy variants are very rare and sell for extremely high prices. Search eBay for Freddy Funko and you will be shocked.

This past year at San Diego Comic Con Funko had limited edition Freddy Funko as Deadpool. Two of these figures were limited to 24 pieces and are currently selling on eBay for over $1,000. Yes one thousand dollars for a Pop Vinyl figure. I collect Pop Vinyl and suprise there are no Freddy Funko version, one day I will hunt one down for a reasonable price.

Marvels 75th Anniversary Deadpool Variant Covers

To celebrate their 75th Anniversary Marvel Comics will be producing Deadpool variant covers for a number of their titles, see list below. I really like the Rocket Racoon variant as it pays homage to the first appearance of Groot from Tales to Astonish #13.
These variants will not be easy to find, so start your search early, get in touch with your local comic shop to reserve what you can. They will be hitting shelfs in October.

The Rarity of Comic Books

If you have ever attend a comic convention, been to your local comic shop or searched for comics on-line then you have surely heard the word "rarity" used more often then you would expect. As a comic book hunter rarity plays a key role in our search for pieces to add to our collection. But what does it mean when you hear the word rare, rarity or some other related word. To me it has always meant that particular comic I just can't seem to find ( right now it's The Flash #1 variant cover). 


What makes a comic book rare? Everyone who is involved in the comic book industry will tell you that Rarity is ultimately what determines a comic's value, it is a fact of supply and demand. This is why Walking Dead #1 has sky rocketed in price and those "rare" comics from the early 1990's are worth near nothing (but still fun to read). 


If there is more demand for a particular comic and a lower supply price goes up and it becomes rare or less available to everyone. Back to the Walking Dead #1, there were only about 7,000 copies made, once it became popular everyone wanted a copy so prices went upwards of $1,200, which is usually heard of for a recent comic. The market demand determined the price increase. When it first came out not a rare comic but as demand went up became rare.

Lets define rarity as applies to comics using Webster's Dictionary  1. rarity (noun) Object or event: Something that happens rarely or that is particularly interesting or valuable because it is so unusual. 
Now lets define scarcity 

• n.noun 1. Insufficiency of amount or supply; shortage 2. Rarity of Appearance or occurrence, comics are valued for their scarcity.

  I would say that these two words are interchangeable when it comes to comic books.
  
  
  There are other factors that help determine the rarity/scarcity of a comic book. As we mentioned in the Walking Dead example the print run was 7,000, that is the number of copies that was initially printed. By today's standards that is really low. So demand also plays a role. If I printed 2 copies of a comic it doesn't mean it would be worth anything because who would want it.
  
  
  Condition has continued to become important in regards to rarity, especially since grading of comics has grown. If you just want to read a particular comic it isn't that hard to find a readable copy but mint copies are harder to find because people read comics. Also note the older the comic the harder it is to find in better condition. This is because people before the 1970's didn't see comics as valuable, they were like magazines read them , toss them around, carry in your back pocket, lend them to friends. So this leads to age being a factor many older comic which may have had huge print runs, Action Comics was selling over a million copies in the early 1940's but issues from that time still sell for thousands of dollars. Had every kid saved the they wouldn't be worth as much as they are.

  One of the biggest determining factors regarding rarity/ scarcity is what actually happens in the comic. Is an important ever occurring,  first appearance of a major character comes to mind. Most of the time when a character first appeares they do not have a fan following yet, over time it grows as the characters popularity grows. The example that comes to mind is New Mutants #98, all the issues near #98 are easy to find and not expensive ($2 to $4 ) while #98 is about $150 and not readily available. This issues has the first appearance of everyone's favorite anti-hero, the merc with a mouth, Deadpool. His popularity has gone up, up and up. Wait until his movie comes out. This goes back to definition of rarity. Something that happens rarely or that is particularly interesting or valuable because it is so unusual.

So what does this all mean when it comes to hunting comics to gather into your collection. Well the ones that are hard to find are considered rare. They are rare because of a number of factors all of which contribute to the scarcity of the particular comic. 

Bottom line is what makes hunting comics fun is that there are some that are rare, we should all have             

Issues on our want lists that are rare, that we have spent some time and effort hunting for. It is this aspect of collecting which keeps up connecting to our pre-historic ancestors.

Rennigers Flea Market - On the Hunt in Florida

If you ate a true hunter/gatherer you are always on the look-out for things to add to your collection. This week we are blogging from Melbourne Florida. Our first stop on the hunt in Melbourne was the Rennigers Flea Market.

Flea markets are a great place to get some REAL deals. I mean some old items cheap or some items you never knew existed at a price you can't believe.

At Rennigers we found vendors with dollar comic boxes and toy dealers with dollar bins. There were about 40 dollar boxes filled with comics from the 1990's. There were about 10 toy dealers along with many other dealers that had a couple of toys scattered on their table.

We ended up spending about $25. Walked away with 21 comics to add to the collection, a Captain Cold happy meal toy and 3 DVD's. My daughter, who is turning in to an excellent hunter, bought some Star Wars figures and costum badges from here favorite shows.

Run down of what we picked up in the dollar bins:

Cable #1 (1993),  Guy Gardner Warrior #15, 26, 30, 35 (1993-1995),  Justice League America Vol. 2 #60, 88, 107, Annual 6 (1992-1996), Legion of the Superheroes #288 (1982), Elongated Man #1, 2 (1992), Mister Miracle Vol.3 #6 (1996), Salvation Run #2, 6, 7 (2008), The New Teen Titans #14 (1985), Lobo #1 (1990), Brigade #1 (1992), X-Force #2 (1991), Invaders #2 (1993)

As I have mentioned many times before I enjoy the humor that was found throughout DC comics in the early 1990's, so I picked up the Elongated Man issues, which I didn't even know existed and the Guy Gardner Warrior ones, I have started putting this run together.

Was able to fill in some more of the Justice League Vol. 2 run. I just figured it is so closely related to the Justice League Europe( lots of crossovers) that it just makes sense.

Cable #1 and Lobo #1 seemed like steals for a dollar. Both characters were very popular in the mid-90's. I think of these as key issues during comics big boom. Both heroes are in that gray not really a hero but not a villain area.

The New Teen Titans issue is a Crisis tie-in. Crisis of Infinite Earths was one of my favorite DCU events, it changed the complexion of the entire universe. Some heroes died others were elevated to stardom. If you never read it pick it up next time your shopping. I am looking for all the cross-over issues.

Salvation Run stars the a Flashes rogues and I have been on the look out for the 7 issue limited series.  I highly recommend it if you are a fan of the villains.

 X-Force is filled with Rob Liefeld goodness. I really enjoyed the art back when these first came out. such detail. I also recently picked up a copy of issue #1 at Special Edition:NYC. Think I might piece together an entire run. Plus X-Force #2 is the second apperance of Deadpool. We all love Deadpool.

Same goes for the Invaders, I picked up a copy of #1 recently so why not start another title search, one book at a time.

I has never heard of the Brigade but it has. Liefeld cover and looked like one of the great attempts at heroes by Image. We'll get deep into Image in a future post.

Finally the Legion of the Superheroes was just because. Never read the title but have heard so many good things about it. Time to give it a try.




We also picked up three DVDs for .75 each. Batman Begins, Catwoman and the Hulk. We are planning on watching every Superhero movie ever made this coming summer. We are starting with the 1966 Batman and ending with Guardians of the Galaxy. We will be creating a video blog to give our reviews so keep an eye out for more updates.

FunKo Fabrikations - Awesome new line, Batman, Harley Quinn and Deadpool

Funko has release another new, soon to be a hit, line of figures called Fabrikations.

The line which was released on June 25th starts off with Batman, Harley Quinn and Deadpool.

Each figure features a rotating head and vinyl accessories and were created with the collector in mind. Each Fabrikation Soft Sculpture is filled with a dense foam to achieve a high-end lush feel and weighted to allow each figure to stand securely. Easy of these figures sport designs  that would be familiar to collectors of Funko's fan-favorite POP! Vinyl Figures line. 

Deadpool comes with his dual swords, Batman had a batarang and Harley Quinn has her hammer.

I can understand why Funko is starting the line with Batman and Deadpool, two just highly popular characters that look great as Fabrikations figures. The inclusion of Harley Quinn further confirms how popular this character has become. My guess is Joker will follow, keep an eye out.
