Guardians of the Galaxy Dorbz Line at Toy Fair

Last week we reported on the Dorbz Line being released by Funko's new Vinyl Sugar Brand.
Well a lot more figures have been revealed at New York Toy Fair including a Guardians of the Galaxy line.

 The GOTG line will include the main Guardians Star-Lord both asked and Unmasked, Drax, Gamora, Groot, Rocket Raccoon, Gamora. It will also include the villains The Collector,  Ronan, Nebula, Yondu and Korath.  Hopefully the line is successful and we see a Howard the Duck at some point.

Guardians of the Galaxy Villains - Pop Vinyl Style

If you have been reading the Comic Book Hunter & Gatherer blog then you know that we are huge fans of  the Guardians of the Galaxy both the comics and the blockbuster movie. You can read all about the characters in our Guardians of the Galaxy Character Guide .
We are also big fans of the Pop Vinyl figures, Dancing Baby Groot has to be the cutest Pop so far.
Well if you also love the movie, collect the Pop! Figures but dealt that the Guardians villains have been missing your prays have been answered. Funko is releasing the baddies of Guardians of the Galaxy this March.
The set will include Nebula, Ronan the Accuser, Yondu, the Collector and Thanos.

Nebula, Ronan, Yondu and the Collector each stand 3 3/4-inches tall but they will all cower beside Thanos.

Thanos is a towering 6-inch tall Pop! Vinyl Bobble Head. With fists clenched and an arrogant grin on his face, he’s adorned in his blue and gold armor and ready to take over the Galaxy… and rule over all of your Pop! collection. No Guantlet yet, fingers crossed the next version does.

Howard the Duck #2 - Guardians of the Galaxy Variant Cover

We recently reported that Howard the Duck ongoing series would begin in March. Well Marvel has done what we predicted already. Issue #2 of the series will include a Guardians of the Galaxy selfie cover.  This will be the cover everyone wants, the GOTG and Howard the Duck together again.

Our next prediction, Cosmo the Space Dog will make an appearance.

Howard the Duck getting his own Monthly series

We, as comic book collectors, have a lot to look forward to this coming year. A bunch of movies, new toy lines and most important new comic book titles.

One of the most anticipated has to be Howard the Duck. Following his appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy, which you can read about in our post Howard the Duck in Guardians of the Galaxy, Howard has become a sensation again, he even  has a Funko Pop Vinyl figure coming out.

Well Marvel has decided to roll the dice and start his own monthly series. The series will begin in March, in Howard will take a job as a private investigator, solving crimes using his brains and his mastery of the ancient art of quack-fu. The series will be written by Chip Zdarsky and drawn by Joe Quinones, a Spider-Man guest appearance is already set, are the Guardians far behind.

This is not Marvel strangest characters first on-going series, Howard’s first on-going series ended with issue #33 in 1986. But with his recent appearance his popularity is back and Marvel hopes to rocket him back to stardom.

For this of you unaware Howard the Duck was the first marvel movie character to appear is his own feature length movie, could this happen again? Time will tell. Until then enjoy the new series.

Cosmo the Space Dog in Guardians of the Galaxy

It has been a little while since we added a new character to our Guardians of the Galaxy Character Guide, but it is never to late to expand our GOTG knowledge. So in today's post we look at Cosmo the Space Dog.

We see him in the Guardians of the Galaxy film as part of the Collectors menagerie. Then again in the post credit scene at the end of the film, he licks the Collectors face. You might be wondering what role has he played on the Marvel Comic Universe, hopefully this helps put the final pieces in your GOTG puzzle.

About Cosmo the Space Dog
Cosmo was a former Soviet Space Program test animal, who was launched into Earth's orbit. Sometime in the 1960's he arrived in Knowhere, became mutated and took over as the stations security chief. Cosmo has the power of telekinesis and telepathy.

First Appearance
Cosmo first appears in Nova Vol. 4 #8, in the issue Nova ends up in the Rip a place where space-time collapses at the end of the universe where the laws of physics don't apply. While there he meets Suspensor, of the Luminals. She suddenly turns into a zombie and Nova accidentally kills her. He then must flee from the other members of the Luminals at which point, out of nowhere, he sees a dog in a space suit approaching him. After petting him Nova learns that it is a high-grade telepath named Cosmo, who can even hear Worldmind. Through a telepathic connection he learns he is on  Knowhere, a city right inside the severed head of a giant Celestial. 

In Guardians of the Galaxy
Cosmo appears in a cell as part of the Collectors collection ( I've been waiting to write that), he is freed after the infinity gem explodes.
Cosmo appears again at the end of the film, post credits, he licks the Collectors face. 

So there is another GOTG character you can hunt down to add to your first appearance collection.

Howard the Duck gets the Funko Pop! Vinyl Treatment

After years of on again off again appearances throughout the Marvel Universe all it took Howard the Duck to get himself immortalized was a small cameo at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy. On the heals of the announcement of the Dancing Baby Groot figure, Funko will also be releasing Howard the Duck.

Howard the Duck will continue Funko’s popular line of Marvel POP! figures. Howard the Duck is the 64th figure. Funko will probably be releasing a larger Guardians of the Galaxy themed line based on this summers highest grossing film.

Date of the Howard the Duck figure  has not been released yet so keep your eyes open.

Dancing Baby Groot coming from Funko

Since first seeing Guardians of the Galaxy many fans, including me, have been waiting for a baby Groot figure. Well our wish has been granted. Funko will be releasing a Pop Vinyl! version of little baby Groot. 

If you haven't seen Guardians of the Galaxy yet, first do,you live under a rock. second at the end of the film there is scene where baby Groot is dancing waving his branches to The Jackson 5's "I Want You Back". Yes it was the cutest scene in the movie and has caught the attention of everyone.

Once we know the exact release date we will update our loyal readers. I also still hope someone makes a solar powered dancing version.

Marvel Entertainment Movie Release Dates

Here are all the movies we have to look forward to for the next five years. Which one are you most looking forward to? The dates and movies are not set in stone for the later ones, just educated guesses.

Marvel is giving fans a lot more information then DC Entertainment has!

The Justice League of America are big Groot fans!

The Guardians of the Galaxy's resident tree has become some popular that even DC comics superpowers the Justice League of America have become fans. I think this is a cosplay.

Actually this was taken from Justice League of America #9 released in 1961 but they sure do look like Groot.

Carina in Guardians of the Galaxy

If you saw the movie Guardians of the Galaxy, Carina is the pink skinned girl who works for the Collector. If you didn't see the movie what have you been living under a rock, get to the theater today then come back and read this post.

Known in Marvel Comics as Carina Walters, Carina made her first appearance in Avengers #167, an awesome Avengers/Guardians of the Galaxy cross-over issue. The issue is must have for Marvel movie fans as it is the first meeting of the two super teams. It be hunted down and added to your collection for as little as $5.00, with a CGC high grade costing about $200. Well worth it for this momentous issue which will surely come into play as the Marvel movies continue to connect to each other.

About Carina
Carina was sent by the Collector to spy on Michael Korvac and turn on him in a moment of weakness. She soon falls in love with Korvac. While during a battle against the Avengers Korvac realizes that she is not helping him, so he kills himself instead of going on with the fight. Carina becomes enraged and battles the Avengers herself.

First Appearance

The Avengers investigate a gigantic space station in Earth-orbit. Aboard, they find the Guardians of the Galaxy, who have travelled back to the 20th century to stop Michael Korvac from changing their past. While the two teams are on the ship the Wasp, Hank Pym and Starfox easily defeat the Porcupine during a fashion show. During the show Korvac meets Corina and transports her away.
The story is written by Jim Shooter with art by the great George Perez.

In Guardians of the Galaxy 
Carina first appeared in Thor: The Dark World as the Collectors assistant, played by Ophelia Lovibond. In Guardians of the Galaxy she is seen in the Collectors menagerie and attempts to steal the Infinity Stone from him. 

I strongly recommend going out, hunting down Avengers #167 and buying it now. Not only another important issue in the Guardians of the Galaxy characters collection but the first crossover between the Avengers and Guardians. What are you waiting for?

Adam Warlocks Cocoon in Guardians of the Galaxy

The comic book community has been abuzz with some of the clues to future characters found within the Collectors menagerie. One of the big ones is Adam Warlocks cocoon. Seen in the background in a container (see above photo)
The cocoon made its first appearance in Fantastic Four #67, it would later hatch in the issue and Him would emerge. Him would later become Marvel hero Adam Warlock. Confused, you are not alone. We wil make it much clearer in a future post, this one is about the cocoon only.

First Appearance

Alicia is lost in Lock 41, while there she comes face to face with the cocoon of Him, the artificial being asks for her help. The Fantastic Four rescue Alicia before Him full hatches and passes judgment on his creators, which he destroys upon his full emergence from the cocoon.
The issue was released in October 1967, written by Stan Lee with art by Jack Kirby. You can add a high CGC graded copy for about $700 and an ungraded issue in a lesser condition for $30. This issue comes from the Lee/Kirby duos when they were hitting their full stride.

Bereet in Guardians of the Galaxy

So you ought be scratching your head right now thinking " I saw GOTG and I don't remember anyone named Bereet. I know who Groot is, and who Rocket was voiced by, I even know Nebula was played by that girl from Doctor Who. Don't recall a Bereet." Here at Comic Book Hunter and Gatherer we help you sought out even the most obscure characters, see in our Guardians of the Galaxy Character Guide.

So who is Bereet and why should we care. Bereet first appeared in Marvel comics way back in January 1977 in the short-lived Rampaging Hulk magazine issues #1. She appeared after that in the Hulk comic throughout the early 1980's. If you can find her first appearance you can add it to your collection for less than $25.

About Bereet 
Bereet is a female Krylorian. She made her living as techno-artist and produced films concerning fictional adventures of herself and the Hulk. The Krylorians are obsessed with the escapist movie-like fantasies of techno-art films, which led to Bereets massive popularity. at one time Bereet traveled to Earth inorder to became involved with the Hulk .

First Appearance

Bereet first appeared in the magazine Rampaging Hulk #1 which was created by Doug Moench and Walt Simonson.  A later version of Bereet which was revealed to be from the main Marvel Universe, Earth-616 (Rampaging Hulk stories were not) first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #269  and continued to appear in the series.

In Guardians of the Galaxy

After Peter Quill successfully steals the orb on the planet Morag and is flying away in his ship, Bereet wakes up and reminds him that she is still there. The two were apparently together the night before. Bereet is played by Melia Kreiling.

Including Bereet in this small role is just another one of Marvels homage to die hard Marvel zombies,   Adam Warlocks cocoon was another. They really know how to keep these fans happy.

So now you can add another first appearance to your Guardians of the Galaxy collection. Next we will look at Cosmo the Space Dog.

Howard the Duck in Guardians of the Galaxy

If you didn't see Guardians of the Galaxy yet, what were you doing the last four day. If you didn't see Howard the Duck in the movie, you didn't stay till the end, always stay to the end of the credits during a Marvel movie, ALWAYS!

The end of the movie has a scene between Howard the Duck and The Collector. Earlier n the movie if you were playing really close attention you would have noticed Howard in a cell in the background of the Collectors room.

For this of you that don't know anything about Howard the Duck, you will when you finish reading this post. We don't only hunt here at CBH&G we also educate.

About Howard the Duck

Howard the Duck comes from  a planet in another dimension called Duck World. On this planet the dominant species are Ducks, other then that the planet is very similar to Earth. Howard is the oldest son of Dave and Dottie. You can find out more on Marvel Comics homepage

First Appearance
Howard the Duck made his first appearance in Adventure into Fear #19. Written by Steve Gerber with art by Sal Trapani. In the issue,  Thog's an out-worldly demon is planning to collide different realms. Thog is confronted by a multi-generational Army led by Korrek, Jennifer Kale, Dakimh, the Man-Thing and for the first time ever, Howard the Duck.
This first appearance will cost you about $800 for a high CGC graded copy or starting at $25 for ungraded. It really is an interesting issue to have in your collection.

In Guardians of the Galaxy

Even though Howard the Duck starred in the biggest Marvel based movie flop which was released in 1987, they still decided to use him as part of the post-credit scene. After the credits the Collector is sitting in the ruins of his collection with Cosmo the Dog, when Howard the Duck makes a snide remark. Both Cosmo and Howard can be seen earlier in the movie locked up as part of the Collectors menagerie. A funny way to end a movie that was very funny. Howard the Duck was voiced by Seth Green.

Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy

If you haven't already heard Guardians of the Galaxy has broke the record for an opening weekend in August, raking in $94 million. We continue to look at each of the characters, this installment of Guardians of the Galaxy Character Guide looks at the main character, Star-Lord.

Star-Lord made his first appearance in the pages of Marvel Preview #4, he even graced the cover. A copy of this will round out your GOTG first appearance collection. Marvel Previews #4 will cost you
Over $1,500 with a CGC 9.0 or higher, ungraded copies will cost you anywhere between $100 and $500 depending on condition.

About Star-Lord

Star-Lord real name is Peter Quill. He was born during an unusual astronomical phenomenon when many of the planets align. Star-Lord was raised by his single mother until she is killed by an alien when he is eleven, His father died of a heart attack when Quill was a baby. Peter becomes a NASA astronaut and while on a space-station an alien entity called the Master of the Sun offers the mantle of Star-Lord (an interplanetary policeman) to the astronauts onboard.  Peter wants to be the chosen one but is rejected at first then takes the astronauts place to become Star-Lord.

First Appearance

Written by Steve Englehart and penciled by Steve Gan, Marvel Previews #4 (Jan. 1976) features the story of Peter Quill becoming Star-Lord, an interplanetary policeman.

In Guardians of the Galaxy

Chirs Pratt portrays Peter Quill in the film. Peter Quill becomes a member of a mercenary gang, the Ravagers . He becomes involved in a galactic war between two alien powers, the Kree  and Nova Corps. He leads the Guardians of the Galaxy in the battle.

Yondu in Guardians of the Galaxy

By now you have seen the movie and maybe have some question regarding the characters in Guardians of the Galaxy, well here at Comic Book Hunter & Gatherer we have you covered, check out our ongoing Guardians of the Galaxy Character Guide.
In this installment we discuss Yondu, who first appeared in Marvel Superheroes #18 as an original member of the Guardians. A mint copy of this issue which is in fact te first appearance of the Guardians of the Galaxy will run you about $500, you can read all about it HERE.

About Yondu
Yondu Udonta is a member of the Zatoan tribe, primitive beings native to Centauri IV. He is a hunter, we like that. In 2049 A.D. after his planet was the first humans colonized outside of our solar system his people fled. Yondu is born in the late thirtieth century. 

First Appearance
Marvel Superheroes #18 was created by Arnold Drake and artist Gene Colan. The issue was dated January, 1969.  In the 31st Century, a group of diverse aliens become freedom fighters. . The founding members are Vance Astro , Charlie-27, Yondu and Matrix. The Guardians were formed to fight the the Badoon, a race that had conquered the Sol system and the Alpha Centauri system. In Marvel comics the home reality of the Guardians of the Galaxy has been designated Earth-691.

In Guardians of the Galaxy
Played by one of me and my daughters favorite actors Michael Rooker, Yondu is the father figure to Peter Quill and leader of the Ravagers, a band of outlaw mercenaries.

If you are looking to start collecting key Guardians of the Galaxy comics your collection will not be complete without a copy of Marvel Superheroes #18. Hit your wallet and go find a copy, it will be going up in value from here on in. Get it, learn it and love it.

Korath the Pursuer in Guardians of the Galaxy

1st App. Korath the Pursuer

It is day 2 of the Guardians of the Galaxy takeover. As the movie soars at the box office we continue our look at the characters. This entry you are reading instead of seeing GOTG for a second time will focus on Korath the Pursure.
The first appearance of Korath the Pursuer was in Quasar #32 which can be hunted down and added to your collection for only a couple of dollars. It is worth hunting the first appearance of Korath in Quasar #32 just for the fact that Greg Capullo did the art in the issue

About Korath

Korath is a member of the alien Kree race. his body was enhanced during an experimental cyber-genetic engineering process giving him  superhuman strength, stamina, and durability. He also has the ability to psionically locate individuals by tracing their brain patterns. Korath is an expert in cyber-genetic engineering, he headed the Kree Empires Pursuer Program which created cybernetic enhanced warriors.

First Appearance

Korath first appeared in Quasar #32 which was released in March 1982, the story was written by Mark Gruenwald with art by Greg Capullo. It is part 3 of the Galactic Storm crossover event. In the issue the Kree/Skrull war erupts and Quasar tries to convince both sides to settle the dispute. It is interesting to note the for newsstands the issue was re-numbered as #1

In Guardians of the Galaxy

Korath the Pursuer is played brilliantly by Djimon Hounsou. He is tasked with capturing Starlord.

Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy

Hopefully you had the chance to see the Guardians of the Galaxy, we will continue our look at the various characters that appear in the film. Nebula is a space pirate connected to Thanos.
Nebula made her first appearance in Avengers #257, you can own a mint graded copy for about $40, yes only $100, ungraded for about $25. Get this comic!

About Nebula
Nebula is a brutal space pirate and mercenary. She took control of Thanoses former spaceship Sanctuary II. She believed that Thanos was dead and Nebula claimed that he had been her grandfather. 

First Appearance

Captain Marvel meets Nebula the space pirate in deep space.  While on Earth teh rest of the Avengers are in the Savage Land with KaZar wife Shanna. meanwhile, the Avengers follow Terminus into the Savage Land, where they meet Ka-Zar and Zabu, they battle Terminus a creature who appears to be a robot, Hercules rips through Terminus's armor revealing that he is in fact an obese creature. The first appearance of Nebula was released in July 1985, it was was written by Roger Stern and pencilled. By John Buscema.

In Guardians of the Galaxy
Nebula will be played by Karen Gillan of Doctor Who fame. Nebula is an assassin trained by Thanos alongside her adopted sister Gamora.
